What is PTE exam?

Pearson Tests of English (PTE) an academic English language test is required for immigration and foreign education. There are two PTE test categories:

  • PTE Academy
  • PTE Residence (Home)

Why take the PTE Academic Exam?

An online English language exam for immigration and foreign education called PTE Academic is entirely automated. The PTE scoring is entirely objective and devoid of any human biases, unlike the traditional grading system, which is driven by AI technology.

Types of PTE exam

There are two categories under the PTE Academic exam:

  • PTE Academic Exam
  • PTE Academic UKVI

 

PTE Academic Exam:

The applicants’ speaking, hearing, reading, and writing abilities are evaluated by PTE Academic. The exam may take up to three hours to complete. More than a thousand universities worldwide, including Yale, INSEAD, and Harvard Business School, take this exam. PTE Academic is recognized in Australia, the USA, the UK, Ireland, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Spain and Italy

PTE Academic UKVI:

The PTE Academic UKVI is specific to the UK. This is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) to be eligible for UK visas. Anyone who wishes to work, study or live in the UK can take up this test.

PTE Exam Fee

PTE exam fee – The PTE exam fee is USD 170 + 15% tax and bank charge for PTE Academic exam.

PTE exam cancellation fees

  • Candidates who cancel their test 14 calendar days prior to the test date are qualified for a complete refund if they are unable to take the exam on the planned date.
  • The candidate will receive 50% of the registration cost if they cancel their enrolment seven days prior to the exam date.
  • Candidates who withdraw their test enrolment less than 7 calendar days before the exam will not be given a refund.

PTE exam rescheduling fees

  • Candidates will not be charged any extra fees for the new test date if they postpone their exam 14 calendar days prior to the original test date.
  • Candidates must pay 50% of the rescheduling charge for the new test date if they postpone the exam 13–8 calendar days beforehand.
  • Candidates must pay the entire price for a new test date if they plan the exam less than 7 calendar days in advance of the real test date.

To reschedule a Pearson test:

  • Open the website – www.pearsonpte.com
  • Log in to the My PTE account
  • Click on the Reschedule or Cancel option

Steps to register for the PTE exam:

  • Open a web account on the official PTE Academic Website or log in to a previously created account.
  • Once you create an account, fill in all the details carefully, including your passport details.
  • Next, you can choose the test centre, date and time that is convenient for you.
  • You can proceed with the payment after filling in all the details.
  • You will receive an acknowledgment receipt once the payment is made.

PTE vs IELTS: Which is more difficult?

IELTS and PTE are regarded as having comparable levels of challenge. Unlike the IELTS test, which can be taken both online and offline, the PTE exam can only be done online.

How to Prepare for PTE Academic Exam?

PTE Academic Reading Section Preparation Tips

To ace the PTE Reading Section, you must be fluent in reading and be able to easily comprehend texts. Here is a list of preparation tips for the reading section – 

Multiple-choice – Single answer:

  • Comprehend the central idea of the given passage. Pay attention to the keywords to find the right answer.
  • Before you start answering, read the questions carefully and understand what you should be.
  • Understand the frequency of the words like only, always, never, sometimes. By getting rid of these options, you can find the right answers easily.
  • This section does not carry any negative markings. Therefore, it is always better to answer it even if you are not sure of the right answer.
  • You must keep in mind that the details in the passage are not chronologically arranged according to the question. More than 50% of the answers can be found either in the first or last two lines.
  • You must be capable of paraphrasing the answers without changing the meaning.

Multiple-choice, multiple Answers:

This part carries negative marking. Therefore, if you are unsure about your answer, it is advisable to not answer the question.

Re-ordering paragraphs

  • Try to figure the headline and the central concept of the passage first.
  • Keep in that the first sentence cannot start with pronouns like it, he, she, them, they and those.
  • For contradictory sentences that start with words like however, but, although and other additional phrases like besides and moreover, you can start by finding the sentence that goes before them.

Fill in the blanks:

  • This part carries no negative marking. Answer the questions even if you are not sure of the right answer.
  • Pay attention to parts of the audio before and after the gap. This will help you find the missing word.
  • You can find the synonym of the missing words within the given passage.

PTE Learning Practice

The PTE Listening section assesses the candidate’s listening skills. The questions will be based on audio and video clips. The audio and video clip will be played only once.

PTE Academic Listening Section Preparation Tips

Here is a list of preparation tips to ace the listening section

Listening Tips – General:

  • You learn to listen actively – listen to news audios, podcasts, YouTube videos, songs and pay attention to parts that you find easy and difficult to understand. After you understand where your difficulty lies, work towards improving those specific issues.
  • Try watching movies with subtitles first and then without subtitles.

Summarize Spoken Test:

  • Limit your answers to a maximum of 70 words.
  • Start your sentence with phrases like ‘The speaker said’.
  • Understand the central focus and pay attention to the repeated words and keywords.

Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers:

  • This part carries negative marking. Therefore, pay extra attention to it and refrain from making wild guesses.
  • Make sure to pay attention till the end of the audio.

Fill in the blanks:

  • For this section, it is advisable to use a notepad to take notes.
  • Listen to the audio carefully and determine if the word is with or without an article if it is singular or plural and so on.

Highlight the correct summary:

  • Understand the central focus and the idea conveyed by the speaker.
  • Follow the elimination method to narrow down your options.

Select the missing word:

You must be able to understand the main concept of the audio in the first half. By the next half, you should be able to predict the ending.

Highlight the incorrect words:

  • This part carries negative marking. Therefore, before you submit your answers, review them thoroughly.
  • Pay attention while clicking on a word as double-clicking it will unselect the word.

Write from dictation:

  • Instead of taking notes, try to type your answers directly on the computer. This will help you save time.
  • Pay attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar.

PTE Speaking and Writing Practice

The PTE Speaking and Writing Sections test the candidate’s writing and speaking skills.

PTE Academic Writing Section Preparation Tips

The writing section consists of two parts. Here is a list of preparation tips to help you do better in both these sections.

Summarize the written text:

  • If you are proficient with your grammar and vocabulary, you can score a 90 out of 90.
  • If your grammar and vocabulary skills are average, you can score around a 73.
  • Limit your answers to a maximum of 45 words. Avoid long sentences as the scoring algorithm may not evaluate them accurately.
  • Capitalize all nouns and the first word of the sentence.
  • Avoid the first-person narrative. Use third-person instead.
  • Summarize each paragraph in a single sentence and provide examples only if it is mentioned.
  • Pay attention to the punctuation and focus on the last paragraph as it summarizes the main concept of the text.

Essay Writing:

  • Understand if it is an opinion essay, problem essay or pros-cons. Then decide on the format of your essay.
  • Pay attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Make sure to follow this pattern while writing – Introduction in the first paragraph, the body of the essay in the second and third paragraphs and conclusion in the final paragraph.
  • Give examples and statistics in the body paragraphs.
  • Limit the word length between 200 and 300 words

PTE Speaking Section Preparation Tips

Follow these tips if you would like to perform well in this section

General Speaking Tips:

  • Watch videos online to improve your pronunciation and oral fluency.
  • Make use of Google and YouTube IPA and Phonemes to enhance your pronunciation.

Read Aloud:

  • Pay attention to the intonation when you speak.
  • Do not pause if you make an error, continue reading.

Repeat Sentence:

  • Listen to the audio carefully and try to memorize the sentence
  • Once the audio ends, start speaking immediately.  There is no sound or text to indicate the end of the audio.
  • Try to remember the keywords and repeat them if you are unable to remember the whole sentence.

Describe Image:

  • Make use of words like illustrate, elucidate, depict and demonstrate.
  • Figure out whether the image is a bar chart, line graph or pie chart. Each of these serves a different purpose. Line graphs use timelines, pie charts use slices and bar charts compare.
  • Do not pause for more than 3 seconds while recording.

Retell Lecture:

  • Pay attention to the keywords and try to understand the central idea
  • Jot down the most important sentences and retell the lecture using them.

Answer Short Question:

  • Add articles ‘a, an, the’ wherever necessary.
  • Repeat the words in the question if you do not know the answer.

PTE Academic Speaking and Writing

This section has 8 sub-sections. The total duration to complete this section is 77-93 minutes.

PTE Personal Introduction With 25 seconds of preparation time, you will have to read out a prompt and record your personal details within 30 seconds. These details are later sent to schools.
PTE Read aloud You will be given a transcript. You will have read the text on the transcript out loud. If you pause for more than 3 seconds, the recording will be stopped.
PTE Repeating sentences Audio will be played. You will have to repeat the audio within 15 seconds.
PTE Image Description You will be shown an image. After observing it for 25 seconds, you will have to describe it in your own words.
PTE Retell lecture Listen to the lecture and summarize it in your words.
PTE Respond to a short question Listen to the audio and respond to it with single or multiple words.
PTE Summarize in a single sentence Read the given passage and summarize the important points within 75 words in 10 minutes.
PTE Essay writing Write an essay in about 200 – 300 words in 20 minutes.

  1. Reading the question – Depending on the length of the text, you will be given time to read the text prompt.

PTE Band Score or PTE Score

The PTE score is machine-scored. The scoring is of two types:

  • Partial Credit
  • Correct or Incorrect

Partial Credit: Partial credit is marked for all right answers. For all wrong answers, points will be deducted from the points earned for the right answers. No marks are awarded for the wrong answers.

Correct or Incorrect: The candidate will be awarded one point for each correct response. No points will be awarded for an incorrect answer.

PTE Score Chart Calculation or PTE Scoring System:

The overall score will be calculated based on the candidate’s performance in all the sections. The PTE score calculators take the sum and average for the overall score. The two important contributors to the PTE score are Communicative Skills and Enabling Scores.

PTE Communicative Skills Score: The score for this category consists of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The score range for the skill is between 10 and 90 points.

PTE Enabling Skills Score: These skills include grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary, oral fluency and written discourse. The score of enabling skill ranges between 10 and 90 points.

For the overall PTE score, all scores under Enabling Skills are added and the total is divided by 6. The average of this is added along with the four communicative skills scores. The average of these 5 parts together is taken as the overall PTE score.

PTE Result

How to check the PTE Result?

Within five working days following the PTE exam date, the results will be available. Online access to PTE test results is available to candidates. Candidates will receive an email notification once the findings are available. They can enter into their PTE Academic student account after receiving this text. Following the real test date, the PTE exam certification is good for two years. Students must repeat the test if they want to demonstrate their qualifications after two years.
